Frequently Asked Questions
About Arthur Murray Dance Lessons

Why should I learn to dance?

Most people come to us because they’ve always wanted to learn to dance, either as a social activity or as something they can do at special events (like weddings). In addition to letting you make the most of these occasions, learning to dance is a great way to stay in shape, meet new people, and develop a skill that you can enjoy the rest of your life. Plus, it’s more fun than you can imagine!

Is it hard to learn to dance?

Many people think they are naturally bad at dancing or that they have “two left feet.” However, this is almost always because they haven’t given it a real try, or didn’t have the right teachers in the past. We all do highly coordinated things every day (like drive cars, or balance several different objects in our arms at once). If you can do any of those things, you can probably learn to dance, as well. You just need the right lessons, a bit of practice, and the willingness to have a bit of fun.

What makes your dance studio different from others?

There are a lot of places to get dance lessons, but only one with the reputation that Arthur Murray has. With 100+ years of teaching new students, proven curriculum, and the best dance instructors you’ll find anywhere, we are the clear choice for students who are serious about learning. And, we encourage a supportive, community atmosphere in all of our studios, so you’ll have fun and make friends while you’re learning.

What dance styles do you teach? How can I know which dance style is right for me?

Here at Arthur Murray, we teach all major dance styles, including Salsa, Merengue, Tango, Waltz, Mambo, and so much more. As a beginning student, we’ll encourage you to try all of them to see which you’d like. Over time, most students develop favorites that they enjoy more than others, and naturally begin to focus on those more often.

Do I need to have a partner to take dancing lessons at Arthur Murray?

Absolutely not, although we encourage you to bring a friend or significant other if possible. Not only will it make your dance instruction more relaxing and personal, but it’s an experience that both of you can enjoy together. Plus, then you’ll always have someone to dance with in a public setting.

I have a wedding coming up – can you teach me some basic dance moves?

We have a special wedding package that’s perfect for brides, grooms, family members, or anyone else who plans to visit the dance floor during the big day. Be warned ahead of time, though: You might enjoy it so much that you’ll decide to come back again after the wedding for more lessons.

Can you prepare me for an upcoming dance competition? Do I have to compete if I’m not interested?

Although we do offer advanced dance lessons for both singles and couples who want to show off their skills in public, competition certainly isn’t required. For those who enjoy it, the choreography, showmanship, and challenging moves can be a lot of fun. If you’re the kind of person who would rather keep out of the spotlight, however, know that you can become a wonderful dancer without ever entering a contest.
