Below you will find a partial list of events and Dance-O-Rama competitions that you need to attend – be sure to check with your home studio to see which ones they’re participating in.
Unique Dance-O-Rama – July 13th-16th, 2017
Unique Dance-O-Rama is a fabulous competition held during mid-July in Irvine, California. Southern California and Orange County proper are known for their beautiful, year-round weather and Disneyland. This location alone sets the stage for an amazing dance competition. Unique is celebrating its 25th Anniversary California Celebration this July, and this event will pull out all of the stops. For the early birds the Tivoli Terrace nestled in the hills of Laguna Beach will host dinner. After dinner, you have the opportunity to enjoy one of the most unique dance productions in the world.
The Pageant of the Masters re-creates famous works of art live, right before your very eyes. As the years have passed by, this competition has broken dance entry and attendance records. The creative Thursday-night dinner show, Friday-night staff performance, and breath taking décor will have you talking about this event long after it ends.
They will also host the very popular “Club 3-Dance Events” for Swing, Latin, and Country Western, as well as adding Argentine Tango this year. As always, you can dance your heart out in the open and closed heats in all of the different Ballroom, Latin, and Specialty dances…you don’t want to miss this event.
Ciao Amore Dance-O-Rama – July 25th-29th, 2017
Typically, this amazing competition is held somewhere in a charming European city – previous locations include Rome and Venice. This year Barcelona, Spain’s Fairmont Rey Juan Carlos will be hosting Ciao Amore. Barcelona is a truly gorgeous city – you must go and check out the sights of this beautiful city before the competition starts.
Also, you can attend a special Flamenco lesson and performance tailored exclusively for Arthur Murray students and instructors. Competitions are held on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday – Friday’s theme is “Art Party” and Saturday features a “Gala” theme. It is definitely an international dance extravaganza with Australian, Canadian, Lebanese, Italian, Peruvian, Romanian, Swiss, Turkish, American, and the Ukrainian studios represented. And yes, you will feel like family here singing Ciao Amore!
North Star Dance-O-Rama – August 17th-20th, 2017
August’s Dance-O-Rama is held in the great windy city of Chicago, Illinois. This city has so much to offer from Michigan Lake, Navy Pier, Millennium Park, to the famous Magnificent Mile (ladies, read: shopping). In 2016, Chicago was named as one of the top visited cities in the nation, so it’s a no-brainer that Arthur Murray would host an event there.
The event will start 100 stories up in the air in the Hancock Building, where the Chicago skyline will take your breath away as you dine and dance the whole night away. The competition begins Friday morning with solos and the closed category. In the evening, let your inner animal roar in the Jungle Boogie themed event! North Star also hosts many other fabulous competitions during the weekend: All Around, Scholarship, Open Amateur Couple Events, and a Professional Salsa Event.
Saturday the competition continues with the open category and 2 dance events. North Star also offers popular 2 dance events in: Country 2 Step & Swing, Social Latin Salsa & Bachata, International Ballroom Waltz & Quickstep, and International Latin Rumba & Jive. The weekend concludes with an elegant formal banquet and Gala, along with student, instructor, and studio awards. Don’t miss out on the Professional Smooth and Rhythm Championships – you can go early or stay late, the choice is yours!

Hularama – January 24th-28th, 2018
Hularama is held every other year on one of the Hawaiian islands. This competition is the perfect opportunity to leave the bitter cold weather behind to enjoy the warm island sun. The big island is the stop of this year’s competition at the Hilton Waikoloa in Kona. Early excursions include whale watching, snorkeling, and of course on the Big Island, the infamous Volcanoes National Park.
This resort is breathtaking with 62 acres of oceanfront property, linked by an air-conditioned tram or mahogany canal boats that take you to your room. I have never experienced such a cool way to explore a property. It also has waterfalls, a water slide, lagoon, and an on-site Dolphin Quest experience. The ballroom opens out to the island air which is the best way to experience a tranquil, relaxing dance competition. Traditions include a welcome Luau and a Hawaiian themed night, of course!
Texas Dance-O-Rama – February 8th-11th, 2018
This down home event is going on its second year and boy did it kick off with a bang! It’s going to be held in the largest city in Texas, at the Westin Houston, Memorial City. Oh, do I love their Heavenly Bed! The Westin is the only hotel that is connected to great Houston shopping at the Memorial City Mall and adjacent to the restaurants of Gateway.
Last year’s early arrival was so popular that we’re returning to the Redneck Country Club with a live country band, BBQ, and dancing. Texans do everything big…so get ready for the Saturday night Oil Baron’s Ball. Of course, this event won’t be limited to just country dancing. All of the Rhythm, Smooth, and Specialty heats will be offered throughout the weekend, similar to any other Dance-O-Rama. This competition will also host the Arthur Murray County Western Professional Championship for the first time in years. The event winners and top instructor will receive an official Arthur Murray belt buckle! So dust off your boots and get ready for a Texas-sized good time!

This is an annual traveling dance competition that hits all of the iconic East Coast cities. Previous tours have included Miami, Orlando, Nashville, and New Orleans. In 2018, it’s the Big Apple…New York City, New York. The early excursion would not be complete without hitting the streets, eating at the best restaurants, and a Broadway Show! The Marriott Marquis in Time Square is a perfect location for a dance competition. This event attracts studios all across the globe, from the West Coast of the United States to far off European countries!
These terrific dance competitions are great for all ages and levels of dancers. There are other smaller events you can take advantage of that are closer to home, including in-studio events, dinner dances, and Showcases. No matter how you get involved, dance competitions will seriously enrich your experience. If you haven’t attended one of these yet, it is definitely bucket-list worthy. If you have had the opportunity to attend, the hardest part is choosing which ones to go to. So, whether you have just performed your first in-studio spotlight, are preparing for a showcase, or traveling to your 10th Dance-O-Rama, these events are sure to put a smile on your face.
Live, Love, Dance and Enjoy!
